The
Administration Block was rebuilt at the end of 2002. It replaced the very
small staffroom and offices built in 1971 for a school of eight teachers.
There are now twenty teachers and extra support staff as well. At the time the Administration area was rebuilt the computer suite was refurbished and the library was moved and custom built into two small classrooms. The old library is now used as a Teachers Resource Room housing all the reading books, and resources for all the other curriculum areas. All the computers in the suite were upgraded by the Board of Trustees in 2005 and are all running on Microsoft XP. The server had to be upgraded at the same to accommodate the increased volume of ICT use by all students and staff. With the help of funding from the Portage Trust, all classrooms now have upgraded computers running on XP. There are several data projectors and mimio (this is like an interactive whiteboard) and each classroom has a digital camera. Digital cameras are used frequently by students to produce Power Point presentations of their work for assessment purposes. The BOT leases laptop computers for all teachers and this provides an extra computer for each classroom. There are currently 370 students aged between 5 and 11. Extension and remedial programmes, such as English for second language students, are available to meet students' needs and provided by experienced teachers. Two Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour provide Learning Support Programmes for students from the Avondale cluster who need this kind of support. The BOT ensures that the school is well resourced and a safe place, physically and emotionally, for students and staff. The school's Behaviour and Relationships Programmes is called 'Shine' and teaches students how to manage their relationships with others in a positive way. Students are helped to understand how to act in different social situations and Shine is about relationships and resolutions. Restorative justice is also used if necessary as part of Shine. |
